Weekly Competition #238 - Rhyming Slang Competition
Competition Details
Closing Date: 05/02/2012
Judge: VonBatCatWith the UK hosting the Olympic Games in 2012 It got me to wondering how visitors to London would cope with Cockney Rhyming slang. Your image does not have to be real rhyming slang you can make some up of your own if you so wish (In English or your native language).
You could have an image of Stairs or Apples and Pears or Apples and Pears on the Stairs…… just let your imagination go wild!
A good link is link
Usual rules “Pentax” etc…. and 12 Midnight finish on the 5th …….. Have Fun

Examples of Rhyming slang:
Ruby Murry = Curry
Boat Race = Face
Dog and Bone = Phone
For example my photo from the last competition could be titled "Shake and Shiver" which is rhyming slang for "River". I hope this helps.

Rhyming Slang Competition.
Many thanks for the diverse selection of great images a delight to view and judge. The scores on the doors are as follows:
Sugar Pill – Sandinista.
Thanks to Jim for getting the ball rolling with a beautifully crafted and framed image incorporating classic lead in line and gorgeous perspective with character sky. Lovely use of thirds.
Cherry Hog – Tarrynaldis
Great shot by new comer Tarryn (A great big welcome from the BatCat), a very professional treatment of this image of hope has captured great character with a gleam in the eye and excellent use of depth of field and so crisp with the use of the prime lens. A grand shot indeed. Much improved from the one posted in the gallery IMHO.
Brian Clough – Hyram
Does exactly what it says on the tin! Great mixture of frozen crispness and blur to give the real feeling of undulating movement. Sky lacks a little but us photographers can’t control everything. Very early shot and totally different from Hyram’s later style. Not sure whether the frame restricts the feeling of movement a bit.
Duke – Frankie
Fran is the winner of the best Panasonic shot – ooops easily done.
Can You Sausage a Goose – Simonarron
Simon did well to capture this and not run away seeing the intense look through the viewfinder. Absolutely great capture of the movement and intensity. A wonderful framing effect caused by the circular nature of the plumage. Maybe the feet are sharper than the beak but at 220mm F4 with that coming towards you still GREAT!
Giraffe – JudithAnn
I always love images that generate emotion when viewed, and this is a real day brightener! I thank you for that Judith. I would have liked to see a larger version so that I could tell whether the soft focus works or not. Lovely Smiler!
Apples and Pairs – Mudge
Classically constructed shot from Fernley which definitely lends itself to B&W and nice to see an Optio in the competition. Again I would have preferred a larger image to really get an idea of crispness – grand shot.
Cold Hail – AxelLuther
Best effort award for Axel for searching out the use of Rhyming slang and I am sure all cockneys will not require your apology. This is a real beautiful piece of craftsmanship which is as should be from Axel. The mirror and post treatment and clarity are absolutely A1+. I can search around this image for hours.
Pipe – Drofmit
Tim’s high framed crop works well to give this shot the watery context. I just love the capture of the delicate ripples. Pity about the protruding stick to the right. I was also wondering if the white splodge was from a natural action of the Snipe. Great entry.
It is sweet apple for me – ArsenAl
Russian rhyming slang to be commended! This image makes me smile funny and querky. Pity about the background distraction above the apple – but it brought a great big smile to my face, Thanks Arsen.
Super Sonic – Geordie01
A well constructed shot from George which shows excellent clarity. Done very well with this kind of product shot to avoid problems of stray light by using natural and a 1/6th shutter speed. Lemon could be a little brighter to boost the impact and contrast with the blue. As I always say any project you can eat or drink afterwards is a bonus!
Dog and Bone Dr, Mhuni
What can I say… An absolutely excellent capture by Dr Mhuni both the subject and the draw off into the background build an exquisite image.Clarity and colours just wow.
Brown Bread – Stopher
One of the types of photography I now personally avoid is weddings! However I may need to rethink that after viewing this shot. Not only is the image fantastically constructed with the pronounced foreground the DoF drop off still retains just the right amount of detail to give the wedding goers reactions. I see two images when I look at this…. The one on screen and the one in my imagination of Chris and the crowd looking at the shot being taken. GREAT!
Trouble and Strife – John Riley
They never are trouble and they never are strife…… And I am sure Sue is no exeption. A lovelly natural light portrait. And if you don’t mind me saying John a great sparkle in the eye and cheeky smile captured for eternity.
Oats and Chaff – Stebbutt
Simon you have captured a great piece of what I call decorative art that is very different from your usual people/street inspired work. This works very well for me - if you knew the décor in my Kitchen you would know how this would take pride of place.
Loaf – Aliengrove
A bit spooky this one – and captivating for that reason. Very different to your usual style Jonathan unfortunately if Elton John gets decapitated you will be the prime suspect. Large image shows a little lack of crispness with the frontal point of focus which I feel harms its final impact. Great fun/shock image.
Currant Bun – Tozza27
Well….. what can I say Anthony???? A Nuns outfit, alcohol and a dogs bowl…. I bet that was a fun night. Viewed large is even more scary but shows real professional capture of the models (your) glinting eyes. The dog’s expression says it all.
Brown Hats – AndyElliot
Lots of cats, Andrew, I am guessing daughters bedroom. Nicely taken shot and great character in the cats eyes, the “ what are you doing look”….. I have four cats and know that look. Lovely home shot.
As for the final placings I used a marking scheme for theme, content, background, technical, craftsmanship and personal feelings.
The Chicken Dinner (Winner) is Axel what it loses in Theme it makes back in the points for technical and craftsmanship. Great.
Second Place - Dr Mhuni - Beautiful image.
Third Place - Stopher – excellent control in the execution and tells a great story.
HCs to Sandinista, Geordie01 and Simonarron
And special VonBatCat bunch of April Showers to all entries.

Compliments to Axel, particularly given the intricacies of understanding the concept of Cockney Rhyming Slang when English is not your mother tongue.
I live only 14 miles from London's East End, but still had to look at an on-line glossary for a few ideas (something to do with my north-western roots, I suspect).

Hi John - a big thank you - I was really surprised this morning, when I saw the results. I loved the topic actually as it forced me first to think about it (very often, topics are quite clear - you immediatly knwo, what you want to submit - this time it was different). Thanks also for the prompt and professional judging and comments.
Congratulation to the podium and HCs - so many great pictures among them.
Next topic comes soon

Many thanks John for my placing!
Congratulations to Axel, Dr. Mhuni and the other HC's.
I composed the shot in Liveview, whilst crouched down (didn't want to get my suit dirty!). I was surprised to achieve such a shallow DOF at the 16mm end. The DA16-45 lens is a cracker!

Thanks for the comments. Couldn't really do anything about the stick... [short of trying to clone it out]
, and the opportunity for a different viewpoint was not there.
The white splodge, as you put it,... was as you thought!
I don't know, there's no training wild birds... and let's face it... pigeons use a newly washed car as target practice.
There are more pictures of the Snipe on my flickr space.
