Weekly Competition #243 - The Passing of Time Competition
Competition Details
Closing Date: 11/03/2012
Judge: davidstormHi everyone, this week's competition will hopefully provide something of a challenge to stretch your imaginations and photographic abilities! Photography is all about capturing a moment in time - the essence of that moment preserved forever in an image. However, photographs can also document the passing of time and this is what this week's competition is all about. I would like you to submit a picture that best illustrates the passing of time, rather than capturing a single moment. This could be a long exposure, or it could be a multi-exposure image. It could even be a short exposure, but whatever the method used it must portray the passing of time, not the single moment. Only one image is allowed and preference will be given to pictures that clearly demonstrate the concept and that 'tell a story'. I'm looking forward to seeing your images and judging for the first time, so good luck and get posting!
Regards
David

WOW! This one blew me away when I saw it! I’ve been a fan of John’s pictures for a while now on the Gallery. They are always very imaginative and very well executed. This one must have been extremely difficult to produce and I don’t know how he has done it without it becoming grotesque! The concept and execution are first class – this one is superb.

Thanks to everyone who entered the competition - some high quality shots in there and a lot of imagination shown! My winning three shots are:
1. VonBatCat – Just great how time passes
2. DrOrloff – Ten Years
3. Axel Luther – One Evening – 50 Years
Many congratulations to John - a deserved winner!
A special mention also to the following that particularly caught my eye:
Johnriley – Advanced Dissolution
GlynM – Landing Time
Here is my more detailed feedback on each shot:
Sandinista - Time space continuum
An interesting take on the theme – a sort of ‘time-warp’ if you will! The second-hand definitely shows time passing so it meets the competition criteria. Lovely and sharp – a well-taken shot with imaginative processing. I also think that the clock was chosen wisely here – the name ‘Quantum’ adds to the space/time feel of this picture.
Tozza27 – Winter Time Trails
A typical Winter Night scene, with long exposure to form light trails from the passing cars. I would have like to have seen an adjustment to the white balance on this one to lessen the orange glow from the street lamps and give the snow more prominence in the scene.
Tyronet2000 – Two Second Exposure
This one is on a similar theme to Sandinista’s clock but is more straightforward than the previous one. I would have liked to see a bit of a different twist and it’s a shame there is a reflection in the top left of the watch dial – this is a little distracting to the eye.
Axel Luther – One Evening – 50 Years
Now this is imaginative! Although there’s no EXIF data, I don’t think this is a long exposure shot, but it expertly fulfils the competition requirements. Fantastic composition, great structural detail and geometric symmetry in the roof of the building and the mirror image echoed by the cars below. The HDR processing is excellent. The only downsides are that the shot is maybe a little ‘over-processed’ and there is a minor detail that have could have been improved upon (there is no night sky visible through the windows of the Polo which does spoil the continuity a little). However, this is a fabulous shot and demonstrates photographic and post processing skill, as well as meeting the competition criteria perfectly.
Johnha – Hurry up, I want to go home
Imaginative and funny, but this is not really demonstrating any photographic skill so could not be considered as a potential winner.
Geordie01 – Getting back to nature
A great B&W picture, lovely subject. Although the picture depicts a moment in time, it does also depicts the passing of time, demonstrating decay and disuse. The only downside is that I suspect the picture has been slightly over-exposed and the highlights in the clouds have blown out. All in all, an excellent effort.
Simon Arron – Rust in peace
Another nice Black & White. This is a very simple picture that tells a story of decay, much like Geordie01’s image. I would have liked to have seen this with a little more contrast in the conversion and I’m not sure whether the vignette improves the image. The DOF is well managed and the picture has a lot of interest for such a simple subject.
Mudge – Outside Clock – York
A nicely taken shot, but there isn’t anything here to make it stand out from the crowd. It either needs a more imaginative approach or maybe something different in the processing.
Davidtrout – Overgrown
This shot is really well taken and perfectly illustrates the depressing decay seen in many of our graveyards today. The snow in the scene adds to the atmosphere. Composition is good, the only downside is a hint of blown-out highlights in the lighter areas of the picture.
GlynM – Landing Time
Brilliantly imaginative and superbly executed to make a compelling image that hits the nail on the head in terms of the competition theme. Everything is sharp / well focussed and the subject matter suits the composite image technique to a tee. I do wonder whether it would have been even more effective as a B&W image?
AndrewA – Old Time and New Time
Wow that is spooky! This is exactly the same clock that features on an earlier entry to this competition by Mudge! I think I prefer this version because it has not only the clock, but also the modern shop signs and hints of the buildings. It could be a bit sharper in the critical areas and probably needs a little more contrast to really make it stand out. A good entry.
Johnriley – Advanced Dissolution
I really like this one. It is very imaginative, both in terms of the picture itself and the processing. It is a shame to see an old Pentax in such a sorry state, but this adds to the image. The only thing I’m not too sure about is the framing of the camera within the picture – it is neither central nor placed on an intersection of thirds and I feel this makes it look just a tiny bit out of balance.
Dodge69 – The Passing of Time
Now, it seems to me that Sean has made a real effort here to comply with all of the criteria that I set! It’s a long exposure, it depicts a churchyard and graves which in themselves meet the theme and it the title is the same as the competition name! I’m not sure if this earns the image more points, but the image is very good in its own right. It is nicely composed / cropped, the subject is well shot and there are no converging verticals which tells me that there has been attention to detail in the processing. The cloud streaks created by the long exposure are just right and the whole thing has a spooky air which suits a churchyard shot. I suppose if there is anything to be critical about, it just lacks that last bit of extra sparkle which would turn it from very good to great.
Drofmit – Peeling, Fading, Ageing…
An interesting subject, lovely subtle colours and texture in this shot. Also, I like the use of the Portrait format which suits this subject so well. I just feel that for this type of shot, it has to be super-sharp and this one could just be a tad sharper than it is. Nevertheless, a lovely picture and one that is very pleasing to my eye.
Frogherder – A Lasting Memorial
An interesting subject – this carved stonework must once have been very grand but is now showing its age a little. This one needs more contrast and sharpness to make the main subject stand out and to reveal all of the textures of the stone. Also, I wonder whether a closer shot would benefit it, this would also help to blur out any distracting background.
Dr. Mhuni – Rush Hour
I like the idea of using a relatively long exposure here to blur the movement of the train passengers. However, for a shot like this to really work, some elements of the scene have to remain sharp, whilst others blur to suggest activity. In this one there are no elements that are sharp or without movement and this lessens the impact.
Lee55555 – What time is it?
Another good idea, this one with time-lapse photography. This approach requires some thought and planning and here I think this element lets the shot down. The distracting shapes to the left and below really should not be in the picture and I wonder whether a different clock could have been used, or whether this clock could have been moved to a more appealing position where there were no distracting elements to crowd into the image.
Stevesphotos – Dark Mill
Another long exposure shot, this one is sharp in all the right places. A dramatic BW conversion lends impact to the picture and the sky is suitably brooding and foreboding. Well done for a very good effort and well worthy of the competition’s theme.
Milamber – Candles
I’m not too sure what to make of this one and I’ve spent a good while studying it! I’ve come to the conclusion that the idea behind it is really clever and it probably represents the most ingenious way of demonstrating the competition’s theme of any of the images entered. However, I do feel the photographer could have made a little more of this idea by tweaking the taking of the picture and adjusting the processing slightly. I think colour may have suited this one and definitely a little more contrast to make the candles and holders more defined. Maybe also the angle of shot could have made more of the reflection and could have cut out the wood in the bottom left which distracts the eye slightly. I do really like this image though and Chris should be congratulated for a great entry. Well done!
Rovingeyeproductions – Time Traveller
Interesting processing on this one, the aim being to produce a sensation of movement with the man remaining still. I’m not sure if it it has quite worked as intended but it is imaginative and different. Another good entry.
VonBatCat – Just great how time passes
Noelcmn – Time and salt destruction
This one is a little more straightforward, a study of the effects of time and salt on structures on the sea shore. Nicely shot, but I think a little more imaginative approach is needed to put it in contention.
Aliengrove – End of time
I’m really not sure what this is – is it a bird box? I bet the clock doesn’t work! This one is beautifully shot and well processed. A very nice photograph.
DrOrloff – Ten Years
Great stuff, full of imagination and again beautifully shot. I particularly love the way the eyes in both the photograph and the real boy are looking straight at the lens. The light and skin tones on the boy’s face are superb and the picture as a whole just looks ‘right’. Splendid!
Hyram – “Time Flying By!”
The title of this one is very clever! This is quite a straightforward shot but is very well executed. The aircraft is pin sharp – not easy to achieve. I also rather like the tint applied to the picture – it seems to suit the nature of the photograph very well. An excellent entry – it would have been nice to also have some EXIF data.
Thank you once again to everyone who entered. It has been a pleasure setting and judging my first competition - I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
Best wishes
David

Thanks for the comments... You've spotted the one drawback with the Optio LS1100... absolutely no control over depth of field [and almost none over exposure]... however, all is not lost... the doors have still not had anything done to them... and are unlikely to have [I hope] so I'll have another go with the K7 and... now which lens to use?
The winner is excellent... and probably very commercial... I can see a fashion or family history magazine using that!
I've decided which lens... my old ME Super's 1.7 50mm... it is still one of the best lenses I've got.

Thanks for the positive comments, David. I too was happy with the concept and not totally happy with the execution. That's what these competitions are for I guess, to help us improve.
Congratulations to the winner - I thought it was brilliant all round.

Great competition: I loved the topic and the resulting entries - an outstanding winner photo and such a brilliant and prompt judging (thanks David and thanks for the podium
)
John your picture is a masterpiece of PP - so perfectly combined
David - I can see your point with the over-processing - it was a bit planned this way to give the whole thing an unreal touch - but I can imagine that this can be felt to be too much - also right with the imperfect reflection (also the shadow of the new car is still the old beetle

Thanks David - great entries and great judging - I have to say John`s picture disturbed me slightly but that is a personal opinion not a judgement on the photograph !
Some excellent stuff in there this week and my little entry was blown away by the competition rightly so.I rather liked the reciprocity failure in the shot as it always makes our road warmer and cosier !!

Just got back from a long weekend.
Many thanks for your critique, I'll take that on board next time I'm looking at similar items (or I'll crop before publication).
Congratulation to VonBoBCat, well done, I've not seen anything similar for a long long time.
regards
Bernard
