Weekly Competition #246 - The Impact of Architecture Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 01/04/2012
Judge: AxelLuther

one of my favorite photo categories is architecture. Special buildings have a special impact to me and I often try to capture this in a way that visualizes the impact (as coldness, style, dimensions, power, warmth etc.). Typical objects for me are modern office/urban buildings, skyscrapers or churches – but there are many other kind of buildings, that have a special impact to people. Please share a photo where you tried to express, which impact a building had to you. I will try not to be influenced by the building itself – the way you captured it, is key factor for the judging.

Hi – thanks for providing such a variety of architecture shots. The range of buildings as well as the range of quality was really wide. To provide an objective as possible (how can art be objective ?? ) I was using again an evaluation concept based on 4 categories: Quality, Originality, Composition, Visualization of impact.
The task this week was, to show the impact, an object has to you – without providing any info in the description, which impact you wanted to visualize, it is hard to gain many points in this category (in general – I often would like to see a bit more background information in gallery or composition postings as I love to understand, how you see things and capture them). With some pictures I also had more the feeling to see a picture of a building but not necessarily an architecture shot – Building and architecture is not the same thing for me.

Old Building in York by mudge
For me first of all a crop from an old building and I found it hard to imagine, what you wanted to impress with the building (the beauty of old buildings, the decay, the preservation the….?? I also think that the crop is not ideal – feels a bit by chance and not necessarily intended. Sharpness and color range are very nice

Dissused Church by bettyswolloks
Perhaps first the issue: Iso much don’t like signatures in pictures – especially in competition pictures – the picture itself should be your signature – everything else is distracting (unless, signatures are below the picture in a frame region). The other issue – I have no clue, which impact this architecture has to you. The tonal range of the picture is nice – the crop is too extreme for me (a bit more context of the remaining building would be helpful). The perspective composition is also good.

Stately by davidstorm
David – you really managed to visualize the power of the building but the interesting thing for me is – if the special feature of this building was the massive usage of glass – I would have expected a more fragile, light, shining image – this is an interesting contrast between the actual architecture of the building as well as the importance. The composition is very nice – just one thing I would have changed – distorting the outside walls so that they get straight. Btw – I am impressed, how mch the IR changes the complete light setting – it looks more as an illuminated night shot – hard to imaginge that you did it at a bright day

Atrium by aliengrove
When I saw the thumbnail Ithought: Wow – when I saw the normal size I thought wow – when I saw the big size I thought the same. Such a great picture. Yes, you did not mention the impact the scene had to you,but it is so clear in this case. The photo has such a graphical and 3D character. The lack of color range, the perfect composition, the perspective – this all creates such a special picture (it also looks somehow like a trachea ). I think you created a masterpiece and you show perfectly what the architect tried to achieve – pomp and circumstances, glamour, giantism…..

Other Worlds by johnriley
Nice to see that the range of architecture shots goes beyond standard buildings. I see what you felt in this scenery – the loneliness – the isolation of ths object. However – I think the PP is distracting and I also don’t like that much, when the used filters are too obvious (like with the lens flare, which looks very much like the PS lens flare filter). John – that you took this picture with a Pentax I believe also without EXIF data

Good Color by puma
This is very much my favorite place for such shoots and I also prefer to use HDR in such occasions. The perspective is really good (in such buildings, I often prefer tilted pillars as they show the height even better). I also like the combination of the cold colors of the ceiling and the warm colors of the lower architecture. However – I think this picture is to bright – it looks a bit too Disney-like to me. These buildings were created in very dark times and they often have this moody dark atmosphere. Adding a bit more black, lowering the overall lightness, and reducing te orange tones a bit would be nicer to me. But this is subjective – I can also accept that you like the bright version more

Houses of the Holy by Sean282
This is a wonderful picture of this building and I perfectly see the impact you wanted to visualize – the special mood of this part of Europe as well as the time it was build. The long-time exposure creates a lot of mystique and the B&W is great. I also has somehow a 3D effect. Little issue: the grainy structure in the castle rock.

Art Deco by Lee55555
I can see what you wanted to impress with the picture – at these days, they added so many of these amazing deco elements to buildings (like the famous Chrysler Building in NY which was build at the same time). However – I see some photographic issues. A bit more vibrancy would show the nice color range better. The crop is not ideal – the lower door is cropped very arbitrary and the side frame is very irregular – left side is cut more than the right side. The ceiling is tilted and the vertical lines would work better for me in this picture, when they would be vertical.

Derwent Dam by AndrewA
Good sharpness and nice dynamic and color range. The perspective really emphasizes the hight. The crop is a bit too hard (lower edge of the tower is missing). I would also have stamped away the contrail. Interesting detail, that the right part of the dam is higher than the left part.

Historic monument by Noelcmn
I remember this event and saw the building often in the news. Clearly an historic moment and I also like very much how they designed the stadium that it looks African. Nicely captured but the way it is captured is not necessarily emphasizing the special character of this building (capturing e.g. a German football arena would work with this very neutral shot as well).

Twin towers by Dr.Mhuni
The composition of this shot is great (but this is anyway one of your talents – I so often love your compositions). The towers are perfectly arranged, rasing from the lower corners. The reflection of each tower adds so much to the picture as well as the brown rings in contrast to the blue overall color. Great picture of twin towers which are definitely less known than the former NY towers or the Petronas Towers.

This hipstamatic-style picture very much visualizes the Warhol-life-style. I like the combination of this building, its composition and the special color range. The whole picture looks very retro and 70-style.

Sol y sombra by perpinya
I love the composition with the dominating vertical structures – the contrast of dark foreground and pale background and the oligochrome style. For me a very architectural photo but I feel it difficult to find out what this building means for you – what you want to show us. Is it the clinic design, the coldness, the strict architecture or the

Interesting object in this competition – I can see what you mean with the complex structure and range of colors. Such brick constructions are very impressive when imagine how they were build. I just don’t fully understand, why you chose the title with the phrase decay – for me, this looks rather well preserved.

Dome by GaryJohn
I know this building and I agree – it is huge and it makes people feel small. The size would be more obvious with a less narrow cut. Color contrast of blue sky and orange building in combination with the white works well for me. The sharpness of the copula is not ideal.

Old and New by TOZZA27
More a building of a house than an architectural image for me. Not ideal that the branch covers the tip of the roof and the missing base is also not ideal. I also do not fully understand the title. I do not really see the “Modern” in this picture?

Canterbury Cathedral by rovingeyeproductions
A nice outside image of a cathedral showing the amazing dimension and craftsmen’s skills. I also like the fact that no persons distract the image and the vibrant colors. Portrait orientation might have worked better (the foreground is not that important but it would have offered space for the entire width of the church – although I assume you wanted to focus on the hight). Again – no description at all is not very helpful.

Crowded by Frankie
More a travel snapshot than an architecture photo for me but an interesting scene. Not sure if the topography would have allowed it but a picture directly in front of the line of houses with no angle might have shown the crowded character better (+ I would have cropped a pano-like part of the picture).

WDCH1 by Dodge96
This building needs no signature – it is 100% Gehry. First I thought you captured and isolated the Guggenheim in Bilbao but it looked slightly different. Amazing to see this variation of the style in a total different building. The way you captured it (and processed it) is wonderful – the whole scenery is modern, cool, stylish. Also nice to read in Wikipedia, that also the acoustic is good in this hal (not every modern concert hall can claim this). I think – you show us a great architecture picture

West Front, Wells Cathedral by davidtrout
Perfect composition and smart usage of the human scale (also a bit visualizing how much these buildings turned from a central part of the populations life when they were build, to a very isolated usage nowadays where less and less people visit these churches). The dynamics, sharpness and contrasts are superb – the perspective as well (and the crop). I also like the green grass on the bottom, as this grounds the church a bit

Stairway to............ by RobCK21
Bit chaotic composition of lines leaving lots of space for interpretation (also regarding the impact, this building has to you). Regarding the song “Stairways to Heaven” I would have expected a stairways that goes a bit further than just to the base of a building.

Spider Web by ArsenAl
Hmmmm – I think my corrected 8-16mm would have captured a web as well (with the right view point) . Fisheyes can make a lot out of architecture objects. Also impressive to see the great low noise of a K5 with 1600 ISO. I like the color contrast and the slightly tilted view point. Not 100% about the architectural impact.

Was great to see all these images and some of them really impressed me. Have to say, when aliengrove uploaded his oicture I thought – wow – whoever wants to beat this picture must provide an absolutely outstanding photo. There were many really good ones but at the end – no one could beat Jon’s masterpiece.

So here my very subjective score:
first: Atrium by aliengrove
joined second: WDCH1 by Dodge96 and Houses of the Holy by Sean282

HC for Twin towers by Dr.Mhuni and West Front, Wells Cathedral by davidtrout for a great harmonic composition

Jon – it’s your turn

Well and promptly judged indeed, Axel! Thanks for the win, and congratulations to the podium places too, which were also the two entries that really caught my eye. Great judging and comments as usual! I have to go into the office now, running a bit late, but I will have thought up a new comp theme by this evening!

First I want to congratulate the winners! As soon as I saw the photo "Atrium" - no doubt I was gone! Excellent, fantastic work!
Axel - about the criticisms of my work .. I think that your 8 - 16 mm does not diagonal 180 mm .. Corrected lenses are smaller angles at the same focal lengths. . In addition, with their help it would be impossible to obtain a curved bend. And perhaps it was a fish - eye effect allowed the paper to be published in two Russian journals, and in Ukrainian to get the title "Photographer of the Year" in Urban photography ..

Axel - Many thanks for for such an inspired take on the subject of architecture. Thanks also for your detailed comments and well structured judging method. I think it all worked really well.

Congratulations to Jon for a terrific winning entry. When I first saw it I thought "well that's it - game over!" .

Congratulations also to everyone else for a fantastic set of diverse images.

Putting "Decay" in the title for my entry was probably a mistake on my part as I agree in the image it does not look too bad. I suspect I was influenced by the general state of this part of the canal, which has been drained for quite a while and depressingly looks largely derelict.

Like most other commentators I saw Jonathan's entry and knew I was way out-classed. However, I always find your comments really welcome so put something in for the benefit of your advice, I agree its more a travel shot than architecture but it was the closest I had. Congratulations to all the winners.

Thanks Axel - appreciate the comments - the "new" was the inclusion of the pendant lights on the branch outside a 200 year old building. Not my best ever shot but always fun to enter.
Well done Jon - stunning shot..............the rest were pretty amazing too !
