Weekly Competition #250 - Reportage Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 29/04/2012
Judge: Dr. Mhuni

Apologies for the delay - I got sidetracked yesterday.

For those of you uncertain about 'Reportage', 'The Great Soviet encyclopedia' () gives the following definition:

'a journalistic genre, the subject of which is a concrete social situation (a “slice of life”), limited in time and place.'

So I'm looking for photographic 'slices of life' with some social resonance.

Thanks for all the entries, which I’ve enjoyed assessing. Shame there weren’t more. I thought it was quite an open subject, but I guess participation has probably gone down a bit of late regardless of theme. I marked the photos in the following areas out of 5 to reach my result:

Topicality
Creativity
Technique
Resonance (combined impact as a photographic image and a social document)

Come to think of it, I probably should have marked out of 10 for the last area as this is key, but I didn’t and I’m not going to go over it all again! I don’t think the result would have been significantly different – certainly those placed would be the same I’m sure.

Frankie – Wrong time, wrong place
You’ve certainly captured a contemporary urban phenomenon. I’m generally not a huge fan of popping though it has its place occasionally, and I like the way you’ve kept the yellow on the jacket and the ticket here, which emphasizes what’s going on well. I’d remove the other colours on the belt btw. You’ve got some clipping at either end of the histogram, though it’s not serious. Compositionally it’s not bad, though I really want the guy to be looking into the shot and would prefer more on the left making it a more rectangular frame. Still, you’ve captured the moment.

dineenp – Just walk on
Is this popping? I’m not sure – it’s more like combined colour/b’n’w. It’s nicely done as the transition is quite subtle. I also really like the film like colour you’ve achieved. (Actually, given there’s no EXIF perhaps this is film scanned). It is of course bang on theme too. Minus marks for quite severe clipping in dark and light areas. Meanwhile, while the blend of colour/b’n’w is well done I can’t help thinking I might have preferred one or the other (though I know you are emphasizing the distance between the subjects by opting for this). All in all, though it’s a good piece of reportage.

Gartmore – Cambridge
Strange – I tried to view the larger image by clicking on it, but nothing happens (does this just mean there isn’t a larger version?). Anyway, a nice street capture. Good bulk on the gent on the left; and it’s a nice touch that his feet are airborne. I like the way they’re both looking out of the shot in opposite directions. It feels like there’s a bit too much space in between the men, and too little between them and the edge of the frame on either side. But I know you take what you can get in these circumstances. That bollard in the b/g bothers me a bit; and it could do with a bit more oomph using levels and layers (it’s quite a restrained conversion) to prevent further clipping in the bright pavement IMO.

Tyronet2000 – What, but I’ve bought fish now
The guy on the phone with the fish is nice. I like the way the three men coming toward the camera are evenly spaced at an angle. I like the woman also on the phone in the b/g – though it would add a lot if she was more prominent. Pity about the guy’s foot. Not sure about colour – there are some nice colours but, what with the diverse clothing, b’n’w might work better. I think cropping to below the roofline of the buildings strengthens the shot. Who’s that guy taking a photo of you in the b/g?!

John Riley – Ted and the Anderton boat lift
A well exposed shot. I like the way the people on the display appear to be posing next to Ted. I find the colours a bit of a distraction and have a hunch that b’n’w might work better. Also from a reportage point of view I feel that Ted would be better placed next to/in front of the boat lift itself rather than the exhibit for it. For me, this has the feel of a local newspaper shot recording something rather than a reportage shot documenting something of social significance. It’s a subtle distinction, but a legitimate one I think.

Steady 99 – Comfy for the Queen
Like the subject matter. I’m a sucker for furniture out of place, and these guys look so relaxed they could be sitting in a pub lounge, and yet they quite plainly aren’t. Colours are quite nice, though I find the coloured pennants in the b/g distract from the main subject and wonder (again) if b’n’w might be a good choice here. A bit more oomph would be good – it’s a tad flat IMO. Also, I think a subtle vignette might be employed which would help pull the eye into the frame more.

David Trout – Hope they remember
A nice photo, well captured in typical DT style. The juxtaposition is great (how long did you have to lurk before the right subjects came along). I like the fact that the second woman is entering the frame, and the detail on her face is great. What detracts from the shot IMO is the window panel on the right. I think perhaps it would have worked if the frame had closed off the top left corner, but as it is I’m a bit uncomfortable with its inclusion.

Bforbes – Lickings of a dog
Another good capture of a moment. Great expressions. Excellent detail on the subjects and the shot is well exposed. I find the background rather blue – have you done some selective processing? Meanwhile – conversely – the red and white banding stands out rather at the top. Compositionally, I find they’re a tad high in the frame – I’d play with cropping from the bottom and right.

Aliengrove – Sunday best
I like the girl and the context is great – a real contrast between gritty and pretty. From the topicality POV this is very strong. There are some technical issues that reduce its impact though. I find the photo has a rather yellow tint overall. Meanwhile, the focus seems a bit off – the posters seem the sharpest element and as a result compete for the viewer’s attention too much. The jumble of structures bottom right spoil the shot a bit too.

Hyram – Street temptation
The light’s excellent in this – a great warm glow from the window and just enough dim light in the surroundings. There’s some clipping of the dark areas, but this is hard to avoid in situations like this. Otherwise the detail is good throughout the frame. Composition is good – I like where the people are in the shot. The only things that spoil it for me are the car and the bright bit of balcony in the top right corner (you could address the latter at least in pp-ing). But overall a nice, atmospheric photo.

Davidstorm – Armed guards
Strong impact photo, both from the treatment of the subject matter and the bold conversion. The juxtaposition of the oof policemen and sharp guard is good. Some detail lost in the dark areas, but I guess this is partly just a result of the high contrast look selected. I might have tried to recover some detail using layers. Re. the composition I think I would have gone the whole hog and adopted a square frame (cropping a little off the right) – as it is it’s a bit betwixt and between, but this doesn’t spoil the shot. The more I look at this, the more I like it.

Mudge – Drunken prank?
Inner city high jinks captured. I like the elegant background. Not so sure about the column on the left – it results in very structured image. Some clipping in the dark areas, and ideally there’d be better detail – but I guess this is partially a product of the small sensor.
Topicality 4.5

Bettyswollocks – Pot noodle
A familiar British street scene – so top marks for topicality. I feel the distance between the person begging and the other people is a bit far for it to really hit the mark. I also find the people are all rather peripheral in the frame – with the centre being dominated by empty pavement. I like the saturated colours. However, dark areas are blocked up quite severely – which is exacerbated by a rather heavy vignette. I like the woman poking out from the corner of the building.

Tozza27 – Reaching for the stars
I like the girl and the star. It’s a shame you weren’t closer. The clutter in the f/g detracts rather. Looks like the white balance could do with adjusting – there is a yellowish tint. Topically I guess it fits – what with the court setting – though it requires your explanation to distinguish it from a family shot.

Frogherder – The road gang have arrived
An impressive piece of kit with the de rigeur workmen hanging around waiting for the action to begin. I think I would have aimed further left to get more space between the lorry – and the sign in the f/g – and the edge of the frame. But perhaps there was a good reason for not doing this. There are blown highlights in the sky and the reflective clothing.

Milamber – First moving pictures
Great expressions on these kids faces. Their clothing is great too. Lovely. Good detail captured as well. Looks like quite a challenging exposure, with the bright light entering from the right in an otherwise slightly dim interior. As a result the boy’s tunic to the right is blown and perhaps parts of the guy with the video camera. Is there a contrast in the lighting temp too? If so, I might try selective WB adjustments. Compositionally I want to yank up the left hand side of the shot, as the space at the top doesn’t really add anything and I’d like to include the bottom of the guy and the kids feet. A pace or so back would have been good, but I’m guessing this wasn’t possible.

Geordie01 – Waiting
Nice colours. I like the framing – the trees at the top and the way the paving at the bottom leads the eye to the main subjects. Exposure seems pretty well controlled. It’s a good slice of life with lots of human detail (I like the posture of the guy between the bin and the seat). Pity the guys in the seat aren’t a bit more prominent in the frame. My only real problem is the b/g – while those buildings look rather attractive, the detail on them competes with what is the real subject of the photo – the people going about daily life in front of them.

AndyElliott – Peace protester arrested
Bang on theme. I like the way all the people/cameras direct the eye to where the action is (apart from the guy framing the right side, who provides a nice contrast). Decent exposure/detail – some blown sky, but not critical and probably unavoidable. I find the jumble of colours perhaps detracts from the impact – wouldn’t a punchy conversion work better here?

Which means the result is as follows:
First – Davidstorm, Armed guards
Second equal – Dineenp, Just walk on; AndyElliott, Peace protester arrested

No third place due to the equal second. So HCs to those on 16.5: David Trout, Aliengrove, Hyram and Geordie01.

Congratulations to davidstorm for the winning entry.

Many thanks to Dr. M for the competition, the fine judging and for my HC.

With regard to my entry, I took various versions of this shot and opted for the one with a car in it because it is very much a part of walking around the narrow streets of St. Malo - trying to avoid being run over by the cars.

I don't know why much of it is not pedestrianised

We always leave the car just outside the old city walls.

Congratulations on your winning entry David and well done to the other high scorers. I loved looking at all the pictures and seeing everyone's interpretation of the theme. Thanks Dr M. for another good comp.

Many thanks Andrew for such a good subject and also for your expert judging, as always. I agree, its disappointing there weren't more entries.
I love David Storm's winner, congratulations David and to the joint seconds Dineenp and Andy Elliott.
Thanks for my HC along with Alliengrove, Hyram and Geordie01 (Howay the lads!)
Andrew, you wondered how long I lurked until suitable subjects walked into the scene. Not long at all, it was a busy market day and all sorts of people were walking past. You were quite right the window balance is wrong, I just couldn't get it right.
My caption says it was taken on the 50-135mm lens but the exif says 16-50mm so that must be correct. I use both these lenses for street phgotography.

Woops! Just noticed that I totted up Aliengrove's total incorrectly. Sorry, Jon - yours added up to 15 not 16.5. Doh! I can understand how I boosted you .5, as I adjusted some scores when reading through the comments and must have failed to adjust the total. However, the additional 1 can only be attributed to my innumeracy!

At least the others are correct (just checked) so I'm not completely innumerate.

Many thanks Doc - comments appreciated and taken on board - it was really just a grab shot and Jo said get rid of the clutter but I felt that was what reportage included ( like the copper in the winning shot )
Great winner and very good runners up - well done to David and the rest of the gang

No probs, Andrew, I was reading my scores and thought something seemed wrong....

Congrats to Davidstorm, Dineenp and AndyElloiot, and to the HC's of which I was briefly an unworthy member Shame there weren't more entries.

I agree with your comments on the my entry, it was taken from a moving car so the AF was perhaps a bit random. The yellowish cast seems to be a characteristic of the lens I used, the Pentax DA 24-90mm.

Congratulations David and well done to runners up.

B&W kills the label on the bag and thereby the joke.

I agree I should have blackened his shoe

Who’s that guy taking a photo of you in the b/g?!

I have no idea, didn't even see him till you mentioned it. He's shading his eyes and talking on the phone (blown up 500%) looks like some worker going by the jacket

Many thanks for your critique and constructive advice.

The pic was clipped on the left because of road signs, various clutter etc.

Sky blown out - it was a clear, very sunny day, looking almost into the sun (I used one of the street signs to shade the camera, which limited my position somewhat)

Congratulations David, looking forward to your choice of subject

Thank you sincerely to Dr. Mhuni for a great competition and expert judging. I am very surprised and flattered to win!

Although the quantity of entries was not huge, there were some great shots for what was a fairly challenging theme.

Congratulations to Dineenp, Andy Elliott and the Highly Commended entries too.
