Weekly Competition #252 - Door to Competition
Competition Details
Closing Date: 13/05/2012
Judge: AndrewAFor this weeks competition the subject is Door to.
The only stipulation I have is that your shot must include a door.
However, the more that the mind wonders where or what does the door lead to or hide the better.
Good luck everyone!

Thank you to everyone who entered this weeks competition. There were some fantastic entries and quite a wide interpretation of the theme, which is good.
Picking a winner between my favourite 4 shots was tough, there can however only be one winner, and this weeks top spot goes to nipper with "The Olde Doors".
I chose this shot as it evokes everything that I was hoping for and is a superbly taken picture. Whilst I can see some of where the doors lead to, I can't help but want to walk through them and explore as so many others have before. The architecture around the entrance is super too. So, well done nipper.
Second spot goes to "Last man out, turn off the lights" by Dr. Mhuni which again is a really super shot that was just pipped to the post by nipper's.
There is a tie for third as I wasn't able to seperate "Must look" by malcolmleader and "Gatehouse" by Skyrider. Both these pictures are fantastic.
I don't intend to offer critique on the other shots as I am not sure I am that good a photographer to presume to do so, but well done to all the other entrants as there are some great shots there!
All the very best, Andrew

Thanks for picking me for joint third, although I think I benefited from having a good subject rather than because I took a particularly good capture of it. Still, it's encouraging to be ranked on my second entry and hopefully it'll give me the confidence to enter photos more often.

Congratulations on your win Nipper and also to the other podium placings. Thanks to Andrew for setting and judging this subject. Will we be getting full comments on all the entries?

Okay, I did start to do so, then changed my mind. So, I will finish and then post my thoughts on all the entries tonight!

Well done Philip, Dr Mhuni, Malcolm and Skyrider. Some really cracking entries in this comp and I don't envy you having had to pick winners from them Andrew. Thanks for setting the comp and judging as well.

Ok, here they are, comments on the non-podium placed entries only...those of you that were placed, please just bask in that glory and expect no feedback
Please do not taken umbridge with any of my obseravations as I am but a keen and enthusiastic amateur snapper...
The Portal - johnriley.
One of those shots that the more you look at, the more you like.
The only reason it was not podium placed was that for me it felt more window to, than door to.
A well thought out, superbly sharp and imaganitive shot.
The Door to our Ancient Past - davidstorm
Just my type of shot, old wood, rust, great stonework and plenty for the mind to wonder and ponder.
For me maybe a tighter crop removing some of the space to the right would have made it perfect.
I was there the day this was shot, and the colours and feel for the gate are absolutely spot on.
I'm 2 - I can manage - TOZZA27
Great take on the theme, and I love the relection of the tempting garden in the glass of the door.
Had the crop been tighter, particularily to remove the left of the frame so as to increase the focus on little TOZZA27 this would have been up there challenging.
I really like this shot.
Eyes, The Doorway to the Soul - tyronet2000
What superb shot - fantastic interpretation of the theme and really well executed.
The only reason this wasn't pushing for a place was that the doors seemed a little lost in the frame.
That said, like The Portal - a shot that the more you see it, the more you love it.
Dukhams - Hyram
Very interesting entry - I like the shot overall and really like the fact that Hyram spotted such a facinating subject.
Altough there is a door there, it didn't quite meet my expectations.
A well executed shot, that is one of those that you either like or not - but I like it!
Door to the Woods - Steady99
First off - Craig you are my mate - so if you don't like my critique - you are free to "try" and kick me at footy on Wednesday!
Perfect subject, an old door embedded in an old wall through which many must have passed over the years. Great colours with a hint of something in the PP.
For me though the door does seem a little lost in its surroundings.
I really like the theme, the colours and the subject Craig.
Life - darlene.
Again - another my type of shot. I like the subject, the colours and the plant growing under the door which says this door isn't used much.
I think the shot would benefit from a straighten so the door is sqaure and central. If it had been mine I may have fiddled with the image quality to get a gritty worn out feel too.
Certainly ticked the boxes as a great interpretation of the theme.
No Entry - Lee55555
A gate I probably wouldn't have passed without examing it's photographic possibilities. I agree with you Lee about what the gate says...what is the other side???
I like the capture of the lock and the wear and tear to the wood, however I am not too sure that the crop works for me overall though I am afraid.
Good entry with a good slant on the theme.
Come on in my dear - davidtrout
Now this is a really superb shot, the light, the balance and the conversion are spot on. I have to say I was really torn about not including it in the top 3.
The only reason it wasn't included was the fact that I felt more drawn to the portrait than I was the door.
I really love everything about this shot though David.
Knock knock - johnha
Fantastic shot and really, really funny capture. Not something I expected to see at all.
There is nothing negative to say about this shot, well except that perhaps we all know where this door leads to.
Overall, superbly original and fun.
Not the Tradesmans' Entrance - sandinista
A shot from one of my favourite photographers on the fourm. Again, a shot of real quality as I would expect.
If I am to be critical at all the interior feels somewhat pinched and perhaps a bit more of either the statue or the window would have been preferrable.
I like the picture, it fits the theme really well.
Pumping Station - japers45
Wow - what a superb shot with some spot on PP too. I really like the interpretation of the theme.
I am not too sure there is much wrong with this other than the yellow and white sign on the door. I am not a huge fan of overly processed and cleaned shots, but would preferred this not to have been there.
Yep, as I said, I really like this shot and very close to a top 3 spot.
Whats behind the blue door? - caj26
I like this shot, the subject, the colours, and the angle of the shot. Plus, is it just me or is there a face on that door?
The only issue for me is I would have preferred a tighter crop above the door.
A great entry caj26.
Into The Light - Dr Orloff
Superb shot and different take on the theme - the lack of a physical door aside - this shot really works.
I did feel slightly overpowered by the light in the doorway and would perhaps have liked to have seen the white thingy to the right of the door cloned out.
A very well thought out and captured image with great mono conversion.
Light House Door - geordie01
My kind of shot, rust, flaky paint and a lock too!
I can't really find anything to be critical of the shot at all - it is well taken, cropped and the light is great.
A great entry that almost made it.
Door to paint - bforbes
Another my kind of shot - this had my attention straight away.
I like everything about this shot and my only complaint is that the door is just too small!
Great shot, just needed more door.
Let Me Out! - Dodge69
Another great shot - the subject, the conversion, all really great.
Almost a podium place, the reason it wasn't was that I felt the door was a tadge too dark - a bit harsh maybe I know.
Dodge69 always produces some great shots - and this is certainly no exception.
Door to Emperor's Palace - Noelcmn
Wow - impressive building, lovely light and that sneaky glimpse of the moon is super.
My only complaint - where is the door? For the theme the door is a bit hidden away for my liking.
Really impressive shot though.
Theft from the railways! - JAK
Very interesting take on the theme, but it really works for me.
I love mono shots - and this is no exception. It certainly ticks the box when is comes to the mind.
Great subject, but no podium place this time though JAK I am sorry.
PawToll...is he waiting? - drofmit
Last entry of the competition and a really pleasing capture to round off with.
This shot has humour and warmth - well for the lady at the opaque window there is warmth.
Although it wasn't in the top 3, I like the shot and thought it the best way to close the entries.
Well, that is it, that was hard work......please forgive any typos and I hope I haven't missed anyone....
