Weekly Competition #255 - "T" Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 03/06/2012
Judge: Sean282

Please limit your title to one word, ...... that word will start with the letter "T"

Any observer should be able to understand the link between the title and the image taken. Please feel free to think out of the box but don't be taking a portrait and calling it "Tim" and expect it to do well. Likewise I'm also not going to allow place names (e.g. an image of Taunton). I hope you get the picture. Apart from that it's open ended so I expect this might be a bit of a mare to judge due to the range of shots which may come in and hope to see some well considered quality captures. I'll be as impartial and honest as I can be.

Good luck

Very enjoyable looking through the entries. I expected a wide range of images and youse didn’t disappoint. Made placing on the podium quite difficult as I really loved several of the entries. But there has to be winner and I’m happy now with the choices made. Would have liked to have scored each of them but have been quite busy between work and coaching kids.
By the way I’ve tried to give my opinions as I see them. Doesn’t mean that I’m right. I’m just this week’s judge, but my intention is to give an honest appraisal of what I see in the hope that it will help/give pause for thought.

So away we go…..

Total by davidtrout
I think that is a cracking shot David. The CEO himself I'm sure would be very happy to have this hanging in his office. Many interesting lines, angles and reflections without being too busy. The framing is excellent.

Thoroughfare by malcolm leader
Nice image malcolm, which is well treated. I do think the road and planting at the bottom take away both from the timelessness of the rest of the image, and the notion that it is as the title is trying to convey a thoroughfare. Personally I think a slight crop taking these out makes a big difference to what is already a very nice image

Threepence by tyronet2000
I've never seen one before. Before my time . ...(only just). I think for this type of image everything needs to be precise. The orientation/symmetry of the coin, its centering in the frame and the sharpness (I think) could be a little better. Personally would prefer a tight square crop and a more diffuse light source.

Tomes by johnriley
A mighty impressive collection of Walter Scott tomes. Well framed both by yourself john and the cabinet maker of course. The K5's sensor and SR has enabled you to take a very nice image..impossible without lighting assistance beforehand which I'm sure would have got you thrown out of the place (judging by threads on the forum about shooting with "pro" cameras in these type of places). I'm more impressed now that I've looked at the exif data. Nice shot

Timqat by Dr. Mhuni
Thanks DrM for introducing us(me) to this ancient festival. Looks to be a very patriarchal society with this image shot giving us a sympathetic awareness of the female perspective all helped by the wide aperture. Kept at a safe distance it all look very subservient (I could be wrong). I love the story it tells. The foreground interest as well the detail is excellent and then the tabot in the background which is why there all there in the first place. Also conflict must not be far away looking at the man on the right. From the left, IMO woman 1 and woman 6 are mother and daughter and really enjoy the similarity of their mannerisms. All in all a great capture

Touchdown by BAJ
Composition of this shot is great BAJ. And at 1/80th you've done a great job panning. It's only when enlarged that the softness becomes a bit too obvious though for my liking but it's a cracking attempt. I wouldn’t get close to that quality myself.

Tidal by bforbes
I don't go out and shoot landscapes at 1pm but I might rethink that now. Very good lead in lines using the road (I presume rather than a slip) which draws the eye right into the image. Lighthouse and sky bring lots of interest to the image. Great composition. Well done.

Tulips by AndrewA
I'm still not sure if there is natural vignetting or if you have added it post processing, but the balance and quality of lighting in the image really stands out to me and provides a perfect atmosphere for this type of shot. Great interest all over with the stone and wonky window . Again well done

Tw@! by bettyswolloks
Ya curtain twitcher ye!! Tenuous link to the title but he may very well be. You’ve just scraped in…..It's a well enough captured image bs, but there’s not enough to interest me I'm afraid. Perhaps a longer lense to get closer to the tw@! and bring him more into the frame would have got the most out of this opportunity.

Trickle by simonarron
A very well captured moment in time. The trickle helps me visualize the behavior of the swan in the water as it feeds. Composition and focus are spot on and the background really help make this a great shot.

Trunks and Tusks by Noelcmn
No extra points for two T's in the title. It’s a shame the image doesn't enlarge when clicked as it would really help to look at that beast close up. It doesn't look as if you’ve done too much pp to the image but it looks to be beautifully sharp. If you've got the RAW file I think with a few tweaks this could be an absolute belter. Couldn’t help trying a B&W conversion on the jpeg with a fairly over the top curves adjustment and think it looks the business (to my taste anyway)

Tank by johnha
I think the tank itself has got the potential with the right composition to make a really interesting shot but feel the rather bland foreground and bright sky stop it coming to life for me but possibly not to others. Think the angle at which you've shot the tank is very good and shows it off beautifully. I'm sure someone who love all things military would love the shot

Tiger by arrondee
The 300mm (I’m assuming) showings its worth again with this impressive shot. Great pose and stare and the square framing really works here

Topology by GaryJohn
A well stitched panorama Gary, but the horizon distortion is not to my taste. Also I think the lighting conditions were not in your favour as the sky is blown out way too much on the left hand side and the shadows on the rock underexposed IMO

Tulip by coker
What a beautiful specimen. Understated but the more you look at the detail the more subtly beautiful it becomes. The green on the petals look as if they've been painted on. I think the natural light reflects the naturalness of the flower itself if that makes sense. Really like it

Tired by stopher
Again I think this image has got great potential with the beautiful detail on the lioness. I think with a bit of tweaking on the exposure and curves would really bring the shot to life (B&W or colour). Also think a crop off the top and right hand side would make it a more balanced photo. Well done

Tufties by JAK
Not a bad image JAK. Drawn to the mother with her piercing eyes. A slight curves adjustment I think would lift it,

Turkey by TOZZA27
My lord. How did evolution bring about turkeys? A real interesting shot. Very human like gaze and head shape. Looks like a human is trapped inside. The white bar of its cage on the right rather than being a distraction, almost brings an extra understanding as to why he looks so peeved off. I do think a crop would help frame the shot better

Train by paulb531
I like this shot paul. Good setup of the composition prior to the getting the shot in the first place and then your timing was spot on to boot. Well done

Tanker by Frankie
Another tidy shot at 300mm. Close up they those big tankers really are impressive crafts and here I do get that sense of awe and that is helped by the presence of the small(er) carrier in front of it. I like it. Shame the left and right don't balance a bit more but it's still a great shot.

Towers by milamber
First off this stopped me in my tracks. A truly stand out shot. The subject, the composition and the treatment all come together to make a truly memorable image.

Take off by bramela
Really nice shot bramela. Amazing what you can capture with a 50mm. The dull background really brings the gull to the fore and it’s been expertly captured.

Teasmade by VonBatCat
There'd be more tea spilled than drank if this was how it was served VBC . Nice word play. A bit of crumpet is always nice with cuppa. I like it

Toad by geordie
Very nice shot. Big fan of the 100mm and this shows of its capabilities beautifully. DOF just right and nice composition.

Tomatoes by GlynM
Two full bottles in the house at the same time. That’s just showing off. Well executed shot GlynM.

Trench by Dodge69
This is a strange but very well executed and processed image. I'm really struggling to get my head around exactly what I'm looking at but that doesn't take away from my appreciation of what you done.

Tree by Pentaxophile
Really nice light made even more special by the rainbow (and is there god rays as well?). I think the foliage on the thorn tree being on the same plane as trees in the background stops it from standing out as much as I think it could if the shot was taken at a lower angle but I understand the positioning of the rainbow in the shot would have been impacted.

Tree by maggiesfloral
Hi maggie. I don't feel the image you've uploaded (not the image you may have taken) is of sufficient quality for me to properly give an opinion on it. Very sorry

TT by Denmark
Nice composition of a classic pose Denmark. It's only when you enlarge that the lack of detail on the helmet and front fairing becomes visible but I really like that shot

Twelve Bore by alun
Impressed by how you spotted this wonderful shot alun. The composition is just fantastic. Landed gentry he ain't with those hands. A real man of the land.

Teasel by Blythman
Lovely shot Blythman. I don't have any long glass but these type of shots are wetting my appetite. The framing, lighting and DOF all making this a memorable shot

Time by davidstorm
And a very nice time piece at that David. The clock is very nicely positioned in the frame and think the lighting really suits the subject. The reflections on the wood, brass/gold and glass carry that golden colour across the image. Good diagonal flow from bottom left to top right.

Torre by Stanovick
A very interesting building Stanovich and you've nailed the exposure spot on for the building itself. Cracking detail to enjoy. Pity the palm tree (and it's shadow) and passing tourists had to be there as I feel it takes away from the enjoyment of admiring the building as you've taken it.

Tiber by jasper45
I really like this jasper. The composition lighting and interest are all there and the colours are just fantastic.

Contrast by senn
Please limit your title to one word, ...... that word will start with the letter "T" ....sorry senn I love that shot but can't include this for consideration.

Tree by ArsenAl
Wonderful colours and composition AA. Beautiful image. Trees can be a nightmare when set against the skyline to get right PP but you’ve done a pretty good job (certainly better than I could do). I love it

Thinker by toner_monkey
That is such a beautiful image toner_monkey. Wonderful sculpture brilliantly captured. I could stare at that all day. Taking the title into consideration, the out of focus skull to me adds massively to the shot as he ponders his existence.

So without further a due here are this week’s winners

1st Towers by milamber
2nd Thinker by toner_monkey
3rd take-off by bramela

(P.S. Was going to list a few HC’s but the list was getting too long so decided against it)

Well done to everybody

Wow Sean282- You have done exceptionally well with your judging here. Appreciate all your comments, and learn such a lot from these. That is one cracking image of Milamber, and worthy winner. Memorable. Congrats to toner-monkey and Bramela. You are right, minimum PP, but I have not thought about a B/W conversion, but will give it go.

Wow....thanks. It's been a truly difficult last couple of weeks with very little time or inclination to take any photos. This has come at exactly the right time so thanks again.

I was pleased with how it came out and it's surprising how even fledgling PP skills can transform a fairly ordinary colour shot into something a bit different.

Well done to everyone else too - I didn't really think I had a chance against some of the others.

Thanks to Sean282 for the judging - there were a lot of entries and I know how time consuming it can be.

Thinking cap on now for next week's competition.

Wow, thanks to Sean for the coveted 2nd place with only my 3rd ever entry. I may have to be brave and enter more often

Congratulations to Milamber and Bramela for their excellent photos and the general high level of entries.

I thought Sean was brave to set such an open topic, it was always likely to create a huge amounts of entries creating a mammoth judging effort, so well done.

Alan

Thanks Sean - great subject and I did a lot of discarding before I settled on the turkey - the bars were a bit distracting I admit.
Well done to Milamber and to toner_monkey and bramela for their contributions.
Some cracking shots as usual and good to see so many entries.
First class judging if I may say so too.

Nearly did a double take on the winner - I thought it was a black and white rendering of my weekly comp #189 entry!

Then again, I'm guessing anyone who has been to KL has taken a similar shot.

Well done.

Well done.

They are almost identical, aren't they. Just the addition of an antenna on mine on the top of the left tower. Like 'spot the difference'.
