Weekly Competition #266 - Clouds Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 19/08/2012
Judge: malcolm leader

Due to the changes in our current weather patterns there have been many different skies with clouds formations forming before our eyes. I would like to see straight images without any digital manipulation; although black and white are acceptable. I am not meteorologist so images will need some compositional input to bring the best out of a cloud formation. Best of luck.
Normal rules apply and I look forward to seeing your entries.

Sorry for the delay in the judging and comments; but a great selection of images from you all who entered the competition. Well done.

dawn's early light - drofmit Clearly a cloud with little sunlight shooting through giving that blue some saturation. Nice composition.

End of the day – Dodge69 Mono image with high clouds giving a cold feel to the image. Could be an infrared image. Certainly works for me with a creative composition.

Late for the sky – simonarron Dramatic image with swirling clouds of yellow and a little blue sky. The clouds appear to moving at great speed.

Soft Wisp Clouds – Darlene A typical english sky during the summer months giving that inner soul that life is worth living. Not to hot or cold.

Reaching for the sky – WaypointCharlie A dramatic evening sky with the clouds so high that the dying sun is at is attempting to shine its last rays through the clouds. The composition works well with the tree pointing to the sky.

Clouds – billy A dramatic image with backlit clouds so high in the sky. Pity there was not more colour but a nice presentable image.

Dawning clouds – carmen19481943 A lovely composed image but clouds needed a bit more definition; probably you could have waited to see if sun rose a little more.

Stripy clouds - swarf Typical clouds for the summer time, high and not moving at all. Nice composition with the house in the foreground giving the clouds some height.

Fowey sunset – davidstorm A wonderful eye-catching image giving the sense that the clouds are belching smoke. Certainly dramatic. Well captured.

The sky over Durham – david trout A dramatic image and your description of the image seems plausible enough. Not seen this type of cloud formation before. Well seen and captured. Good to see a little land to give some perspective.

Sunset from Lanwonno – silconchippy Image certainly dark and foreboding has the sun settles for the night and the clouds go on their merry way. Nice composed image.

Sienese sunset – AndyS What can I say, the clouds are a deep orange and appear to be swirling in an arc to where? Clearly the sun causing a dramatic effect to these clouds. Nice image and well captured.

an unusual sky for London – runnycustard The image is certainly unusual and the clouds appear to be dense bubbles over our great city. But well seen and captured. No doubt they have a name in weather forecasting circles.

suspended animation – stopher Infrared certainly works in this image especially amongst the clouds; not so sure about the foreground. But a good effort in attempting a different slant in photography.

Lone Straw Bale – quackpants A well composed image; a typical harvest image but works with the cloudy sky. Well done.

Liverpool river front – Geordie01 Beautiful panoramic image of Liverpool with an evening sky. The cloud formation certainly sets of the image. Would have been totally different with a bland sky. Well done.

In The Clouds – VonBatCat Clearly the clouds are extremely low over these rocks. These clouds have no definition and are probably rain clouds.

Danmark – AxelLuther One dramatic sunset with a mass of clouds slowly moving away has sun sets. The foreground clearly gives it some perspective. Well seen and captured.

Way above the clouds – joanjbberry Something very eerie about the image because so little sunlight. The clouds appear like cottonwood but doubt a little damp. But well captured.

Storm brewing – Beermonster Brooding clouds over an english field no doubt waiting for that rain. A nice well composed image.

winter fairytale – loshihyen A cloud that we do not see in Britain but certainly dramatic in colour and intensity. Well seen and captured.

The Abandoned Bridge – peteste A well composed image with a great angle leading to the cloudy sky.

Cloudy clouds! – bettyswolloks Clouds that are certainly heavy with rain I suspect but great definition with the sun shining through them. Well seen and captured.

Dorset hill – sophiecentaur A windy hill with the clouds floating past. Good composition with the dark foreground being quite foreboding. Well seen and captured.

Cumulus – aliengrove Yes; certainly a dramatic cloud image. My fist thoughts that it was an erupting volcano cloud. Nice bright colours with the sunlight shinning through. Well seen and captured.

Canadian Summer Storm. – JudithAnne A dramatic image with great cloud definition; in context with surrounding buildings where rain on the roofs will certainly patter. Well composed creating a wonderful image.

A Bird – kosh Had to smile at this image, it is certainly bird like with those wisps of cloud forming the wings. A well seen image and you captured well.

Power and the Glory – JAK Heavy white cloud over this dramatic setting. Works well over the spire giving a spiritual feeling about it has the cloud raises. An exceptionally well composed image. Well done.

Cumulus over Newbiggin – tyronet2000 Good well defined cloud over a coastal resort. Love the light around the cloud giving the foreground some structure. Well seen and captured.

Top of Baslow Hill – paulb531 A foreboding image with magnificent dark grey whitish clouds. I always thing of a far away mountain range when driving towards these type of clouds.

Looks like Rain, Again – bforbes A lovely well composed image with those dramatic dark rainy clouds. The dark foreground works well giving some context to the image.

Storm Clouds Gather – johnriley Yes; dark clouds once again forming over us without any definition but we all know that rain will appear very soon over our roofs and gardens.

Goodnight Clouds – Frankie A dramatic image of a sunset over the sea but clouds disappearing fast. Goods colours reflected from the sunset into the night sky. A good attempt of difficult subject.

I'm not surprised about the delay with such a well subscribed competition. It has to be down to your choice of such an inclusive subject. Well done. Congratulations to JAK and the others mentioned in the results

Much as it would be nice to win one of these competitions I can see that it's a double-edged sword - setting and judging the next one is quite a challenge. So thanks to Malcolm for a good subject and swift judging.

I'm very much a novice so I find it educational to see other people's photos and to read the judge's comments. Personally I like 'Dorest hill' by sophiecentaur as it is my kind of composition - I like the way the clouds leave you in no doubt about the horizontal.

Given all the exceptional entries I didn't expect to win! Thanks for the judging, Malcolm, also taking the time to comment on the entries and selecting mine as the winner.
My image was taken quite a while ago on a full frame Pentax!! It tippled down soon afterwards. I also set up a Super 8 camera to record the cloud build up that day, so even after 30 years it was a day never to forget, fitting for the location of "The Prisoner" series.
What was interesting for me with that photo was the cloud peaks matched the building outline so well.
So I need to come up with a theme it seems.....
