Here's a common shield bug and below are two images of his eyes.
I'm sure you guys can do better than this!
Have a go!
If you're up for it, go and find a shield bug (they're everywhere) and submit it here.
There's no time limit and the winner is simply the biggest, clearest eye - taken WITHOUT CROPPING.
Straight out of the camera, clean it up, resize the entire frame to 800px, sharpen etc.
feel free to leave comments and cast your informal vote in this thread.

I think the first and second images are excellent, the third is a good effort, possible movement of your subject, at these focal lengths, I know is very demanding. good take though.

Now there's a challenge, and where are all our shield bugs . . . in hiding coz it's too hot. I haven't seen any for some time, but if I do . . .

I guess we can open it up to other bugs. The thing with these bugs is they have very small eyes, pretty much invisible to the naked eye. (well... mine at least).

But it's just a bit of fun so fire away!

Nice photos. Amazin' texture these guys have when viewed up close like this.

They really are the aliens, huh?

How about this one?

It's the colours and textures that got me into macro stuff.
C&C welcome.

Great shot 08tiger! (nice bike! ...ah...if only...)
What's going on with his antennae?
he's definitely a proper 'bug' - I think that eye arrangement is one of the hallmarks of the sort of creature we're aiming for.
Is he a different colour in the spring?

We dont have spring as such here, they say summer and winter but the only difference is the night time drop in temp and less humidity, we dont have leaves dropping and colour change it,s just always green or brown if dry.

Nice! certainly very informative.
Any more magnification left in that kit of yours Clarky? How do your macro lenses perform on the bellows?

Nice grasshopper eyes 08tiger, lighting is a bit harsh tho'. Is this straight from the flash? I usually bounce the flash off a large reflector hovering over the lens, it is a problem sneaking up on the blighters* but it makes nice 'sky like' highlights.
*focal distance: 50mm 1:7 on tubes - about 1 inch
