I have downloaded v. 1.11 firmware update. I have read the readme file. However, which ever of the two ways available to install the update nothing at all happens. My K-r says that I am running v 1.0. My pc tells me that it cannot open this file. I have win7 installed. Has anyone any ideas, please?

When you unzip the downloaded file you should get a readme.txt file and another one called Fwdc209b.bin - is that part working ok?
The Fwdc209b.bin file is the one that you put on the SD card for the camera to load from. You don't put it in a directory, you put it on the card (i.e. the root directory). Then you power up as in steps 4 and 5: 4. Turn the camera power on while pressing the MENU button. 5. "NOW LOADING" appears in the LCD monitor, and will change to the "PROGRAM UPDATE". At the bottom of the LCD monitor, CURRENT VERSION 1.00/1.01/1.10 UPDATE VERSION 1.11 will be displayed. So at what point does it depart from that sequence? Just erase everything from a newly formatted card and then copy the .bin file onto it. You're then good to go and just follow the instructions on Pentax's website.

I'm not pc literate. My SDHC are the ones that I used in my previous bridge camera. I've never been aware of formatting them. I have been taking a few 'pics' today. I probably need to know how to format my cards. Yippee! It all starts to deteriorate after the download. I can't get any further. Kind regards.

I've managed to format my sdhc cards. The firmware file on my pc downloads page reads thus. FWDC208B.bin and not 209. It is from here on that I am stuck. I haven't a clue how to copy the update onto my card. That is my problem, gentlemen. Kind regards.

I hope what follows is correct. I have managed to format my SDHC cards, I hope. I think that I have managed to copy the update file onto my SDHC card by doing this. I dragged the file icon directly onto the top of the drive letter 'H' on my pc. I am now waiting for my battery to be fully charged before I try to finish the updating. I believe that if your battery is not fully charged then the camera will be U/S and will not work. Am I correct in what I have tried to do, please?

Open the zip or exe (not sure which one it is, I think the latter); you should have the option to extract. Extract the files and remember to where you extracted them.
Next drag-and-drop the bin file onto the card, safely remove the card, put it in the camera and follow the instructions given earlier. Once your done, format the card in the camera as that will recreate the required DCIM directory. Our posts crossed; if you open the H drive (by double clicking it), you should see the bin file.
Fully charged batteries are advised; the update process can fail and turn your camera into a doorstop if the batteries run flat during the upgrade. In that case it needs to be fixed by Pentax. The update process, by the way, only takes a few minutes. To all of the above members who came to the aid of an old 'duffer'. Thank you very much, your help was very much appreciated. After around three hours I have finally managed to update my K-r, thingy!
You don't realise the problems that arise when you are on your own and the manuals never give you all the information that you need. If I was pc literate and know what I think I know now, the whole operation from download to finishing the update would have taken about ten minutes. My first day as a member is nearly over. Now all I need to do is learn how to work the K-r 'thingy'. Does anyone know how to ....... Kind regards. Gedski. Last Edited by Gedski on 18/11/2011 - 18:29

I thought that main reason to update was to use HDXC cards but i have not got any so i did not bother but i did update the firmware on a k110d to use cards larger than 2gb that was worth doing unless i am missing something. i will wait until vr 1,2 for the kr and decide then.

Why did you have to update the K10d to take above 2gb, the K10d, was SDHC ready, I have one of the early K10d's, takes SDHC (ie above 2gb) no problem. No update of firmware. Take care. Chris R. I.
