I have chosen : it'll be the K5 with the 18-135 mm lens. I'll get the 55-300 pentax at a later date.

now they are out of stock in brussels..

Good choice! You won't be disappointed. Just used that combination this morning and I once again noticed how fast and silent focusing is compared to many other lenses.....

I look forward to seeing your photos

Is the AF fast ? does it keep focus easily on jets ?

Not particularly .. it is adequate but not very consistent.

To be honest the pictures you posted were fine, if you already have Nikon lenses I really can't see the need to change brands unless it's all about weather sealing.

The D7000 has better AF and a larger selection of lenses available over 300mm (which you will need for long range aircraft), the K-5 has weather sealing ... apart from that I can't really see much difference.
No equipment list here .... move along the bus please.

I do hope Pentax improve the AF considerably for their next model. 'adequate' is a good description.

I want weather sealing, as someone here stated : why is it we had weather resistant cars for over 50 years, but not cameras ?

I use the AF-C on the Nikon D5k, thus not taking advantage of the 11 focus points, but using the center cross-type one instead. The d5000 only has one cross type and does an adequate job at shooting aircrafts, the k5 has 9 cross type sensors, so I guess the AF will be a little better... (the D7k only has 9 cross type sensors too...).

I still have my pentax ME Super, I hope that the 50 mm f:1/4 will be usable on the K5, because although it is manual focus, it is a superb lens.

The Nikon is from my job, so I don't feel obligated to follow that line, I guess it's also why I bought an iMac awhile back...

I've been away from the forum for a long time, but recently read about how much of an improvement the K5 is over previous models, and was wondering about upgrading my K10D.

However, it struck me that the K5 has already been around for a while and may be due for replacement, so this thread has been an interesting read for me.

K30 has some interesting improvements over K5, but is clearly weaker in other areas. K5 replacement should combine these.

I think that I'll wait and see what the autumn brings ... though how long it will take for a new model to arrive on shelves in Philippines is anyone's guess.

A K-5 replacement is nigh. The K-5 is a fantastic camera though. I had a K10D and K20D and upgradfed them to two K-5s.

From what I've seen of the K-30 ( an I like it ) , I'd still take the K-5.

I think if I was you I'd wait and see what the K-5 successor is goign to be like.

Yes, I'm tempted by the K5, and I've seen it on the shelves in one store here in Philippines. But realising that it's been around for almost two years, and that the new K30 has some significant improvements, I am inclined to wait.

I'm happily a new K5 user precisely because i's at that wonderful stage of being a great top spec camera at a decent price. Such moments are fleeting. I'm enjoying using it (a lot) while others talk about it. So much better than the KR and KX fun as they were.

Yes, now is the best chance to get a K-5 at a great price. The replacement will undoubtably be more expensive and, although it may well have improvements, waiting means we're always avoiding buying. That way a lot of time and a lot of fun can pass us by.

Waiting when we're 3 months away from end of life is a little different to waiting when we're 3 months after launch.

I forget how many months (or was it years?) I waited for the *istD to launch - I got one from the first batch delivered. Up until then I continued to use my Super A, and my 2.5Mpix Olympus.

It is indeed. It's the best point at which to get a good deal costwise, which individuals will weigh against wanting something newer at a higher price.

What price progress?

Stifling one's life on the basis that something might go wrong is not a mindset I find healthy
