That's comparing Samsung vs Sony Exmor and there's a lot more than the bit depth which separates the two sensors.

A comparison of K-01 or K30 vs K5 would compare the same Sony sensor, but one with 12bit and one with 14bit oputput. From what I can tell, the additional 2bits have only a subtle effect on IQ even if your torture test the files.

On that example the K-01 is on the left, the K5 is on the right, both images 400ISO DNG files, with the same amount of fill and brightness added in LR3.

The K-5 looks a clear winner.

The K5 retains more saturation and contrast, but is equally noisy. In reality, I'm never going to apply +100 fill and +100 brightness, so it's an extreme example which reveals a slight benefit to the K5.

Now, try the same with the GX20 and the K5 or the K-01....

So now many stops can the k-1 be increased decreased by in Lightroom? I assumed the extra 2 stops headroom was down to the 14 bits...

Held a k-5 saturday in my hand at waterloo's mediamarkt, the view finder I like but the grip is too small for my hand... my little finger folds under the body..

has the k-30 (should be out on June 25, so yesterday) the same grip ?

I would say it has.

One of the three reasons that all of my DSLR's and film bodies that take either a grip, winder or motor drive are gripped.

There certainly is! My K-5 arrived yesterday & brief testing shows a huge low light advantage over my K-7. I haven't done comparison prints yet but on the computer monitor the 5 looks good.

I have just sat for a while entering Tesco clubcard voucher codes to double up at Jessops (shame really as SRS would otherwise have got the buiness nearer my birthday in September) - half price something on the way - k5 is winning so far

Up to 5 working days for the vouchers to arrive and then however long it takes my local Jessops to obtain the shiny new toy

Now though I have to decide which lens to get for my birthday (as suggested by Alan/fatspider)

I would like to buy a new camera (I have a d5000) and am seriously considering pentax. I was wondering if you could tell me what you think of the k5 and its resposivity and image quality. I am a military plane spotter as a hobby and the camera I buy will have to be able to do that. I saw on the forum that people took some really good looking pictures with the k5 on the par with what we publish on airshows.be ! So it may be possible to do some spotting with the k5 after all ?

Do you think I should wait for the k30 (coming june 25) as it has an improved version of the AF system found in the K5 ?

I have a K-5 and I absolutely adore it. And although I have a Nikon D3, D200 and D5100 - all highly competent machines - the Pentax is my main camera for all sorts of reasons. And don't get me started on those Limited primes lenses! I recently bought the 15mm f4, and I fear that my bank balance will suffer in the coming months as I add to my collection.
