Mint and super rare Pentax lens collection - some advise please

Posted 29/04/2012 - 15:49 Link
Hi all,
I am new to the forum and am seeking a little advise.
I have acquired a large quantitiy of K mount Pentax lenses from a deceased estate and will be auctioning them over the next week or so. The original owner was a collector rather than a user and as such they are all 100% immaculate, i'd wager that many have never been on a camera.
Among them are some of the rarest and most sought after SMC Pentax lenses, research through this forum has confirmed that. One has a rarity rating of once in several years on Bojidars Pentax K page.
Is there anywhere on this forum it would be acceptable to give a heads up on all of the lenses that I have for any member who may be interested in bidding for them? I don't want to tread on any toes or break any forum rules.
Many thanks
Jim

Welcome to the forum Jim. Now that your a member there's nothing to stop you selling them in the Classified Adverts Forum. Just establish a fair price that you would be happy with, take some 800 pixel wide photos and list them. There are some guidelines available for the adverts as well as how to post the photos. It also saves ebay fees which hopefully will allow a lower sale price on here.

Thanks for the advise Algi, the only problem is that as a non-expert I am not 100% sure of the value of each lens which is why an auction format may be better for me. Another forum member has kindly agreed to value the items for me though so I can see where I go on that.

looking at completed sales on ebay for the items will give you and idea of their worth, I'm sure we'd all be interested to see what you have.

Hi Ken, some of the lenses seem so rare that I can't find them on eBay but the list is as follows:

Pentax A* 200mm f/4 macro
Pentax A 200mm f/4
Pentax 28mm f/3.5 shift
Pentax A 24mm f/2.8
Pentax M 135mm f/3.5
Pentax 80-200mm f/4.5
Pentax A 100mm f/2.8
Pentax 35mm f/2.8
Pentax M 120mm f/2.8
Pentax-F 50mm f/1.7
Pentax M 50mm f/1.7

I also have a K2DMD body which has a little brassing but is otherwise good

The shift lens usually sells at about £300--£350. The buy-it-now prices on ebay are often grossly inflated at around £500--£600.

The M135/3.5 about £35, same with the M50/1.7. The A100/2.8 probably about £100--£120. As others have said, the A*200 macro could go for £1000, who knows? The A24/2.8 is probably worth about £150. There isn't a K series 35/2.8 so assuming that one is an M series lens, about £40.

The K2DMD might fetch £75 if in good condition. Hard to price that one as it is one of the rarer bodies.

Hope this helps. Kris.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Fantastic Chris, many thanks. The 35/2.8 is an M as you rightly say.

I'll be putting them on tonight and keeping my fingers crossed.

Most of these points have been made already, but here goes anyway...

Auction has the advantage of a wide audience so you will probably get better prices for some items (particularly the A*200 macro, the A24 and the F50) but you will also have to pay for the privelege (Listing and final sale fees plus PayPal fees potentially) this can be towards 20% of the selling price I believe.

If you gather the pricing advice from people on here, add it to other research (ebay completed prices, etc) then add a little bit on for top condition items and knock a bit off for lesser condition items, that should give you some "fair" pricing ideas.

Listing on here will cost you nothing

I (along with several other members) would be interested in the A* 200mm Macro, but I doubt many of us would pay the £1k that you may reach on EekBay

Good Luck

p.s. If you want my opinions on pricing let me know and I will send them to you.

The A 100/2.8 should be worth £200... due to rarity value.

The 'M' 35mm f/2.8 should go for about £60. Make sure that
when it's stopped down to f/22 the iris opens and closes
quickly as you flick the projecting lever on the back of
the lens, whilst it's not on a camera. It's a common fault
with this lens and usually frees itself after a few flicks.
It does later return though
