The first monthly competition is launched! Here is a thread to discuss it, ask any questions, make any comments. After the first image is posted I will remove myself from the thread and will judge the results after the competion ends at the end of July.
Have fun! Best regards, John

Could struggle with this one as there is not a lot of night up here at the moment

I did think of that, but there are some parts of the world where there's no night for 6 months of the year. You do have some night, by which I mean after sunset and before sunrise, so my apologies for keeping you up late or getting you up early!
Hopefully, there will be enough night for everyone who wants to enter.

So you, being quite a bit further south, must get some night. It sets here at 22.02 and I know I get darkness. Bjørn may struggle a bit up in Trondheim where the sun sets at 23.32 and rises again at 03.14 tomorrow morning, but I can't see it being a problem in the UK. And you have all month and the nights are drawing in again (what a miserable thought that it

So I'll take the RS1000 and if I get mugged whilst roaming about in the dark I won't have lost much

I would hazard a guess and say it starts immediately after Twilight at sun set, Civil or Nautical or Astronomical, and ends immediately after Twilight at sun rise.
For me it's when I turn the telly off and go to bed and ends when I get up to stay up Regards Stan To My Snaps... PPG

Important distinction because there is a huge difference in photography between a just after sunset shot, blue hour shot and black sky shot. Personally I would regard night as the hours of darkness. Maybe the first entry is a good guide.

I'm assuming the judge will check the time in the exif data and decide if it's night according to which latitude we are in. Do I need to tag my entry with GPS data

The judge will use common sense. Night is after sunset and before sunrise, as defined in a post above.

As happened when the still running 'Heritage' competition (please don't forget it, you have 'till Wednesday!) was announced someone almost immediately posted a picture in which the EXIF data indicated it was taken some time ago. The same thing has happened here with the 'Night' competition, so just a reminder that the intention is that you have to go out and take the photograph after the competition is announced. Back catalogue entries are no no's!
