I'm glad I'm not going to the Olympics as I probably wouldn't get in with my Billingham bag. And I certainly wouldn't be giving it up with no hope of its return. It doesn't sound as if it's going to be much fun to me, with no doubt lots of arguments and videos of clashes with security on YouTube in due course. Best regards, John

There goes my skateboard cat too!
They really are treating the whole event in the most ludicrous fashion. It is almost a complete no fly zone, and I await the first story of photographers getting detained under the terrorism act for taking pictures in London as a whole! My Photobucket

Boris Johnson and the entire Olympic committee haven't thought this event through at all!! Not only are photo enthusiasts (as opposed to "professional" (media) photographers) going to be severely hindered, I'm gonna have fun trying to plan out our collections and deliveries in Central London since at least 85% of our clientbase lies in the areas designated as official Olympic routes. None of our drivers will be able to park in the delivery bays that they can at any other time, and certain roads will be "persona non-grata" to courier traffic (unless you have a shiny brown van with UPS emblazoned on it!)
I'd have thought that allowing people "free rein" with a camera/camcorder would have been a good thing! God forbid it happening, but surely it would be of more use to the Met and/or security services (MI5) to have images of a suspected terrorist from potentially several sources, than "hope" that one "lucky" tourist captured the incriminating photo?? No doubt, we'll also have the "job-centre rejects" stopping people from taking photos because "it's against the law".. you know the one - the law that they know you have broken, but don't actually know what the actual Act of Parliament is called - they just know that the law exists, at least in their own befuddled singular braincell. So a Pentax Q a 1.7TC and a DA200mm might be ok? Does the TC work on a Q?
Or will some people in pointy purple pyjamas frogmarch you off to a hulk moored on the Thames ... Pentaxshhhhhhh Last Edited by dougf8 on 02/06/2012 - 19:11

I don't think you need the TC Doug - the 200mm will be a 35mm-equivalent of 1100mm all on its own. That should pop nicely in a jacket pocket.

The Q might have a use after all. Pentaxshhhhhhh

How about a Tamron 500mm mirror. That and a camera are less than 300mm long. Then use a walking stick with a flip top & 1/4whit mount.
AP were saying last week that the police have warned the security guards that it is not illegal to use cameras in public. Glad I'm not going anywhere near the place. Bernard

The whole attitude of the Olympics stinks. it's stopped being a sporting event to becoming a method of the Establishment trying to prove to the people they can protect us of fictional terrorists. Which of course includes measures against Photographers who have been innocent victims of this ridiluous war on terror rubbish for 11 years now.
I'm not into sport at all, but I do like snapping important events. I'm going to try and snap the flame when it comes to my area, but I'm not interested in goign anywhere near the Olympics themselves Bodies: 2x K-5, Sony TX-5, Nokia 808 Lenses: Pentax DA 10-17mm ED(IF) Fish Eye, Pentax DA 14mm f/2.8, Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8, Pentax-A 28mm f/2.8, Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC, Pentax-A 50mm f/1.2, Pentax-A 50mm f/1.4, Pentax-FA 50mm f/1.4, Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7, Pentax DA* 50-135mm f/2.8, Sigma 135-400mm APO DG, and more .. The list actually implies that using a camera within the stadia, which are not public btw, is fine as long as its not too big.
The prohibited items have nothing to do with terrorism, and are more to do with not spoiling the enjoyment of other spectators. Some photographers can be amazingly thoughtless of others in their quest for 'that shot', and sitting in a cramped seat next to a Bigma user would not be fun. It's actually quite good that they have specified a maximum size for the equipment, which is much less vague and open to interpretation by over zealous security guards than rules at other events we have heard about. And it doesn't discriminate against DSLRs, which is good. I don't really know what the point would be of taking a huge lens anyway. You're hardly going to compete with the official togs down by the track. Better to concentrate on candids and wide shots to capture the ambience of the stands.

If I was going I'd take the DA15mm and F35-70mm, in a small messenger bag.

I'd take similar for events such as this: F35-70 is a good call - maybe the DA50-200 (very small for the focal length) too... Just another reason to love the DA 55-300, under 30 cm fully extended on K10.
Same for 18-250 so that can be on the k-x to get any wider shots of the park architecture as well. Times like this are consoluation for not to having the money for expensive lenses. Ayway, going for the 'experience' not to produce super high quality large photo's. Sharon's: K-x, FA35/2, DA 18-250.Glen's: K10D, DA100 Macro, 55-300, Paragon 500, Silk Pro700 Tripod

Why do people want to take photos at one of the worlds most media covered event in the world.
Why can't people who pay to go to these events just enjoy it rather than see it as another photo op??? PPG Portfolio Flickr Equipment Pentax K-5 mk1 & mkii Pentax: DA* 16-50mm 2.8 : DA* 50-135mm 2.8 : F 50mm 1.4 : DA 35mm 2.4 Tamron SP 400mm f/4 (65b) : Tokina AT-X SD 100-300mm f4 |
