Staedy on Dodge69, your statement is just as fallacious as the fallacious argument you are refuting, but in reverse....there's no evidence to support it either.

It's a similar thing to thinking Made in Germany is better than Made in Singapore on a classic Rollei compact, the assumption is that standards in Germany were higher than in Singapore.

Likewise, Japan has the reputation rather than Vietnam. However, whether there is any truth in this or any evidence of it is something else. For all we know the Vietnam factories (I think Pentax has two) may have much higher standards and the people stricter attitudes to quality than the Japanese. Just as much as the way many perceive it the other way round.

My own perception is that lenses made in Japan or Vietnam seem equally well made and all deliver equally good results. The only factor might be relative rarity of one or the other from a collecting point of view. I use them though, I don't collect them.

I completely agree. As far as I'm concerned the only difference is, if* I come to sell my 43 or 77, they might fetch a slightly higher price than a MIV version.

*Note: that is a really big IF

Someone on the other forum did a series of tests with MIJ and AIV examples and found them to be identical results-wise.

He did qualify his findings with an "I don't know how they'll be performing in 2 years' time" comment but to all intents and purposes they're identical.

However, the MIJ versions do command a higher price - they are seen as more desirable. So when you buy or sell one, just bare this in mind.

Ahhhh, thanks for the info. That will be the label that fell off when I first opened the box. I wondered what it was.

To be serious for a moment, if we can assume that all of the parts used to assemble a 31mm Ltd (and perhaps any other lens) are made in the same place, does it really matter where these parts are combined and does it materially affect the performance of the lens.

It's entirely possible that Pentax's Vietnam assembly facilities are actually superior to their Japanese factories because I think they are more modern, and all assembly staff irrespective of their geographical location, will probably have followed the exact same training procedures, albeit in a different language.

Mike-P has already posted in this thread a link to Ned Bunnell's site where he has tested 3 copies of each and found them to be identical

I've noticed people talking about wanting this lens, but made in Japan. Why?

I don't hold any idea of better Japanese manufacture... well not for the 43Ltd. Was able to try both last month at SRS, one (an early silver 43) made in Japan showed strong purple fringing whereas the made in Vietnam didn't. I wonder if there has been a change in the coating of the rear element in the last 15 years?

I don't there's any such thing as a 'Made In Vietnam' or MIV lens. My 43Ltd was assembled in Vietnam. Anyway I don't care where it was assembled as I'm not going to sell it.

Nowt to do with cameras or lenses, but it has been said that the Toyotas made in Derby (actually much nearer Burton) are better than those made in Japan. Likewise the Nissan plant in Middlesborough??? has a very good reputation.

No evidence? Surely you jest. How many times has 'Japan vs Vietnam' been mentioned on this forum and others similar? How many times is it used as a selling point in the classifieds and on auctions sites. What is this thread about?

I will happily admit I am prejudice against whites however, not so much because history clearly shows we have had such little regard for other races, but mainly because I believe the vast majority of our music stinks.

You are in inappropriate territory and you seem to be the only one making these sort of remarks, so let's just hold it there and move on.

They may well be better cars here because ones for the Japanese home market are only expected to last three years or so because of their extremely stringent 'MOT' test.

Maybe the long journey from the Japanese car factory to Europe has an affect on reliability... Sat on docksides waiting for ships and then being at sea for I guess a couple of weeks could be detrimental.

With modern engineering and manufacturing by controlled by computer there is now very little human intervention in consumer goods. So I would expect very little difference in quality from various countries, I don't include china in that generalization whose quality control tanks from superb (apple products) to the fake products touted on eBay etc...
