Glad to be of help with the techy stuff, but the quantum mechanics of the washing up bowl is far to clever for me "sorry".

OK ran the Huey Pro over the mac and there is quite a noticeable difference. Brightness drastically reduced, colour temp colder. I do like the original view with punchy bright vibrant colours but if they are unrealistic and way away from what I can get printed than what's the point? Panglossian apple dream land.

I'll stick the laptop, the mac and the canvases side by side and see what the score is. When I get time....

Huey Pro says laptop is just a little bright. Colours less corrected by the profile than the mac. So my natural tendency is to whack the brightness up. Laptop was closer than the mac probably explaining the better match of the laptop than the mac.

I'll buy in a few prints for frames and see what results look like.

My point, as CMW skilfully summarised, was that a too-bright monitor will fool us into making our images too dark for print, since paper is a relatively dull medium. Unfortunately there's no escaping the fact that a monitor that's well set up for photo editing (for print) will be less than optimal for web viewing etc. Having said that, one gets used to a less-bright display - it's certainly easier on the eyes.
