Shutter count

When I had a 35mm, shutter count amounted to either "It's working or it ain't".

Now I have a K200D, I can check the number of times the shutter has been activated and I start to wonder about the life expecancy of the shutter, and what it will cost fo fix when it goes.

So, who has the highest shutter count, and what is the official expected failure point count on Pentax cameras?

Pentax DSLRs are designed to work for at least 100,000 shutter activations.

I tend to upgrade my camera before that

Check this out for the K10 which should give you an idea. There is a link to the K20D to the right but without very much data. Presumably the K10 & K20 will be similar.

Sorry - see you have a 200D - check this link from the same site:

Pentax say it should be good for at least 100,000 activations, but I don't think there is an official number.

Somebody posted a link, which I can't find now, which shows some cameras averaging well over that number.

My K20 shutter count is 10,540 but if I run it through PhotoMe it says 10,920, which is the actual number, as it takes into consideration shutter activations that haven't taken a picture,

I wouldn't be worring to much about it failing anytime soon, it would be a rare occurance I suspect.

Is it just me or do digital cameras not have shutters? OK, I'm being pedantic but wouldn't the mirror be the first thing to go?

You should certainly expect it to last for a long time!

That olegkikin site is interesting, but obviously it is no real guide to how long your own shutter will last. It could go at any time, or last for the whole useful life of the camera.

That's what your warranty is for anyway, and if it lasts 2 years, then it will probably go on for a lot longer than that.

I'm assuming here you're an average user and not a demented pro firing thousands of shots a week!

Don't see why a digital camera shutter should have a different lifespan to that of a film camera. You didn't worry about it then, why worry about it now?

greynolds999,
Digital compact cameras, as a rule, do not have shutters, dSLRs do have shutters.

We shoot a lot more images than we did with film, so shutters will be reaching high actuations much sooner.

However, they are rated for a number of exposures that far exceeds any possible amateur requirement and the cameras are upgraded anyway on a regular basis. The technology of shutters is as perfected as we could hope for, so very few will fail.

How many of us have exceeded 10,000 images before upgrading a body? Even that is only 10% of the rated shutter life.

My DL2 has just had its 17500th click - still going strong (and so it should be!)

My K10D shutter count is ~64000. No problems so far.

eat my dust.

But in reality I'm also worried about it. Its makes my "rate-of-really-good-pictures" pretty low.
